(DIY) Parabolic Wi Fi Antenna

Hi guise. Jadi haritu modem aku kena tembak petir. Pastu aku pi tukar baru. Malangnya yang baru ni sucks pulak signal dia tak berapa nak kuat. Jadi aku ambil inisiatif ni untuk do-it-myself Parabolic Wi Fi Antenna.

Okay quick briefing pasal science behind this thing:

First things first, parabola ialah satu bentuk yang macam piring. Senang cerita macam piring Astro. Bentuk ni banyak kita nampak dalam geometry matematik. 2D Equation untuk dapat kan parabola ialah y = a*x2 where a is a constant. Yang 3D nama dia Paraboloid. Apa yang special pasal bentuk geometri ni ialah ia ada focal point iaitu point di mana semua parallel line bertemu di tengah tengah arch parabola tersebut.

Back to our science. Parabolic Wi Fi antenna ni kira booster untuk signal router. Pattern asal (tanpa antenna) dipole antenna ni macam bentuk dough nut kalau tengok dalam 3D. Kalau pasang antenna, pattern ni berubah jadi lebih pointing ke arah di mana curve parabola tersebut di hala kan. Illustration:

Pattern ni dipanggil omni-directional dipole antenna. So sesiapa yang cakap "weh point la kat aku antenna router tu" NO it doesn't work that way. It doesn't shoot signals like a gun. The radiation resembles a dough nut just like in the diagram above.

So here is my parabolic wifi antenna. Aku tak mau explain step by step camna cara buat benda alah ni sebab aku punya macam shit. Jika mahu tutorial sila pergi sini. Tapi at least aku perasan ada gains dalam signal. And I'm 65% happy about it :)

One thing I learned while doing this project is it should not have any wrinkles as it'll fucked up the signal. See mine, wrinkles errywhere. But it helped though like I said signal gained a little bit. But not much. Rule of thumb of building this thing is the bigger the better. Arc size doesn't matter. A wide arch just means the focal point will be shallower than a narrow arch. What matters is the size. Here's some signal analyze using my phone:

Ada beberapa variations kau boleh buat dalam DIY project ni. Kau boleh pakai parabolic antenna terbuang dan cucuk antenna modem ke tengah tengah parabola tersebut. Selain itu, cabut SMA connector dalam modem tu dan connect kan dengan coat hanger besi to make a small Yagi-uda antenna -- this method will look more like a DIY project. Selain itu lagi, boleh guna kuali, pasta strainer atau apa apa perkakas dapur yang berbentuk paraboloid. Make sure it can act as a reflector.

Also, learn to how parabolic antenna works. Overall, I think this should work only for a short range signal. If you want to have big range boosters, please buy a real antenna and don't make shitty design.
